The Platinum Puppy Package

The DigUp guide for setting your puppy up for success

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is an exciting adventure filled with love, laughter, and, let’s face it, a few challenges along the way. With the right guidance and a solid plan in place, you can ensure that your puppy grows into a well-behaved and confident companion.

So what should you look for? As a dog trainer, here is my Platinum Puppy Package to get you started on the right paw.

1. Socialization and Puppy Playgroups

Socialization is key to raising a well-rounded and confident dog. Exposing your puppy to various people, animals, sounds, and environments during their critical socialization period (usually between 3 to 14 weeks) helps prevent fearfulness and aggression later in life. Look for socialization opportunities in your community, such as trainer organized puppy playgroups. These environments provide a safe space for your puppy to interact with other dogs and people and learn valuable social skills. As an added bonus, playing with other puppies is a great way for young dogs to learn bite inhibition – which means less nipping at you!

Read here for why we don’t recommend public dog parks, especially for young puppies.

2. Puppy Group Classes

Enrolling your puppy in a group training class is an excellent way to kickstart their education and strengthen your bond. Group classes offer structured training sessions, where your puppy can learn basic cues, polite leash manners, and essential skills for living harmoniously in a human world. Additionally, interacting with other puppies in a controlled setting teaches valuable lessons in communication and impulse control.

3. Private Training Sessions

Every puppy and every household is unique, and some may have specific concerns that require individualized attention. If you have specific goals in mind for your puppy, or just want someone to help you set up your home environment for success, consider booking private training sessions with a certified dog trainer. Private sessions allow the trainer to tailor their approach to address your puppy’s specific needs and provide personalized guidance to help you overcome any challenges you may encounter.

4.Socializing to New Places

Introducing your puppy to new environments from an early age can help them develop good feelings about new places throughout their life. Take your puppy on short outings to places like the veterinarian’s office, groomer, pet stores, parks, and busy streets. Make these experiences positive and rewarding by using treats, praise, and plenty of encouragement. This will help your puppy learn to navigate the world with ease and become a well-adjusted adult dog.

Raising a happy, healthy, and well-behaved puppy requires time, patience, and dedication. By taking proactive steps to socialize your puppy, getting started with training early, and seeking professional guidance when needed, you’re setting them up for a lifetime of success. Remember to celebrate the small victories along the way and cherish the special moments as you watch your puppy grow into a wonderful canine companion. Happy training!
